When you picture aging skin, what’s the first thing you think about? Those pesky lines and wrinkles, right? For our June Spotlight, we praise the cosmetic treatment that essentially established the medical aesthetics industry – good ole neurotoxins.
These injections have been a beauty secret for droves of women (and now men) for years in turning back the clock and keeping wrinkles at bay, and there is absolutely no sign of any waning in popularity anytime soon. While neurotoxin (or “tox” as we call it at the Pharm) is an appropriate treatment option any time of year, it’s particularly great for looking refreshed in the summer months. As a big bonus, it can also be used to treat hyperhidrosis during the upcoming steamy months. Let’s dive into the specifics of terrific tox injections!
What is neurotoxin in the first place?
Neurotoxin is a purified protein used in aesthetic medicine to temporarily relax specific facial muscles that cause the skin to crease and fold. The most recognized brand name for injections is Botox®, but other great options include Jeuveau®, Dysport®, Xeomin®, and Daxxify®, all of which we offer at Beauti Pharm. All work similarly to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles by blocking the nerve signals that tell your muscles to contract. This softens existing lines and helps prevent deeper wrinkles from forming, resulting in smooth, refreshed-looking skin without surgery or downtime!
Tox is most commonly used to diminish forehead lines, frown lines, crow’s feet, and bunny lines. But these powerhouse injections are so versatile that they can also be used for jawline slimming, jaw clenching (TMJ), lip flips, alleviating headaches, and addressing hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) in areas like the underarms.
But back to the wrinkles – how long do the skin-smoothing results last?
For most people, results typically last 3 to 4 months with the majority of tox options (Daxxify results may last 6 to 9 months in some cases). But that all depends on the individual patient and the specific area being treated. With regular touchup injections, you may begin to notice longer-lasting results as your muscles adapt to staying relaxed over time.
And there are things you can do to enhance your results!
One simple way to enhance your results from tox injections is to take zinc supplements. Zinc helps support the body’s response to neurotoxin by improving how the product binds to nerve endings, which may lead to faster onset, stronger results, and longer-lasting effects. I typically recommend beginning taking zinc (as directed, of course) 7 days before treatment and 7 days following your appointment to help boost effectiveness. Always consult with your medical provider before starting any supplement routine, however.
As for how many treatments you’ll need, most of my clients return every 3 to 4 months to maintain their results with tox injections. During your consultation, I’ll work with you to develop a personalized treatment plan based on your facial anatomy, personal goals, and lifestyle. For deeper static wrinkles I typically recommend staying consistent with treatments every 3 months for 3-4 treatments total. We’ll go over all that when you and I sit down together to discuss, however.
There is minimal downtime associated with neurotoxin treatments. Some people may experience mild redness, swelling, or bruising at the injection sites, but these effects typically resolve pretty quickly. You can likely return to most of your daily activities right after your appointment.
Now, let’s talk tox results!
Following your injections, you can expect results starting to appear within 3 to 5 days, with full results being visible at 14 days post-treatment. On that note, I recommend scheduling your appointment at least two weeks before any important events you may be getting glammed up for. As for maintaining those results, regular treatments every few months as well as supporting your skin with a strong at-home skincare regimen, rejuvenation treatments, daily SPF, and a healthy lifestyle will enhance and prolong the benefits of neurotoxin for you to enjoy for months and months to come.
