Medical Weight Loss
Semaglutide & Tirzepatide Injections
Statistics show that approximately two-thirds of Americans are overweight or obese. Extra weight can do more than just make you feel self-conscious about your appearance; it can also contribute to potentially serious health issues, including heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and an increased risk of certain types of cancer. While proper diet and exercise continue to be the best route in preventing and addressing excess weight, there are some medically advanced weight loss options available today to help. At Beauti Pharm, we’re proud to offer semaglutide and tirzepatide injections, two of the most recent revolutions in effective medical weight loss.
These are FDA-approved medications traditionally used to help patients with type 2 diabetes manage blood sugar levels. In more recent years, however, injections have also proven to be beneficial for people wanting to lose weight. Tirzepatide, in particular, received FDA approval for addressing obesity under the Fast Track designation.
How do medical weight loss injections work?
In a nutshell, both drugs are aimed at helping you feel full faster and longer. Semaglutide mimics a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), which interacts with the parts of the brain responsible for regulating your appetite and signaling the feeling of fullness from eating. Tirzepatide is a dual receptor co-agonist that activates both GLP-1 and GIP (glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide). GIP is another hormone that plays an important role in stimulating meal-time insulin secretion and that feeling of fullness.
What’s the difference between semaglutide and tirzepatide?
While both medications have shown benefit for medical weight loss, studies have indicated that tirzepatide may lead to slightly more significant weight loss than semaglutide. But there were some limitations to these findings as clinical studies did not use comparable doses. Researchers studying semaglutide used 1 mg doses, while researchers for tirzepatide used the maximum approved dose of 2.4 mg. Different dosage sizes can lead to significantly different effects. Also, tirzepatide did not receive traditional FDA approval for weight loss, whereas semaglutide went through the normal FDA approval process.
How much weight can I expect to lose with weight loss injections?
In clinical trials, people who received semaglutide injections experienced a 5.9% weight loss percentage at 3 months and 10.9% at about 6 months. Studies on tirzepatide have shown that nearly 75% of clinical trial participants lost up to 16% of their body weight. It’s important to note, however, that participants took tirzepatide to manage their diabetes rather than exclusively for weight loss.
What side effects are involved with medical weight loss injections?
Both mediations can lead to potential side effects ranging from mild to severe. Side effects of tirzepatide may include nausea, diarrhea, low appetite, vomiting, indigestion, constipation, and stomach pain. Semaglutide has many of the same side effects in common, including the potential for nausea, diarrhea, stomach pain, vomiting, and constipation. Rare but more serious side effects for both medications may include:
- Pancreatitis
- Gallbladder issues
- Kidney failure
- Hypoglycemia
- Changes in vision
- Allergic reactions
