How This Peptide Works

PT-141, known by its generic name bremelanotide, is a synthetic peptide originally developed as a tanning agent. Later, researchers discovered its effects on sexual desire. It’s been beneficial to premenopausal women with acquired, generalized hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD). It’s also studied and used off-label for erectile dysfunction in men.

Unlike drugs such as sildenafil that act on blood flow, bremelanotide works through the central nervous system. It activates receptors in the brain that are identified as a pathway linked to sexual arousal and desire. This is different than compounds that affect vascular mechanics. This is why PT-141 has been described as working “in the brain, not the body.”

An Option For ED Treatment

Considerations

PT-141 does have some risk of side effects. The most common are nausea, flushing, headache, and injection-site reactions. It can also cause a rise in blood pressure, so it’s not recommended for people with uncontrolled hypertension or cardiovascular disease, and it may also affect skin pigmentation.
