Tesamorelin is a synthetic hormone (GHRH) analog designed to stimulate the body’s natural production of growth hormone.

One of the primary benefits of tesamorelin is its effect on visceral adipose tissue (VAT)—fat stored deep within the abdomen around internal organs. Clinical trials found that daily tesamorelin produced a meaningful reduction in VAT.

Fat Reduction

Tesamorelin’s most recognized medical benefit is reducing excess abdominal (visceral) fat in adults with HIV-associated lipodystrophy. Antiviral treatments for HIV can cause abnormal abdominal fat accumulation, or lipohypertrophy. Tesamorelin provides a targeted approach to treating excessive abdominal fat, rather than normal diets or exercise. In the United States, tesamorelin is FDA-approved specifically for this purpose; it is not approved as a general weight-loss medication.

Many people have what may be called “stubborn” fat—fat that seems to remain, no matter how hard you diet or exercise. Tesamorelin has been show to provide benefits to a number of people who are not HIV positive but who want to target accumulated fat.

Studies of patients using tesamorelin report approximately a 13.1% reduction in fat from baseline after 26 weeks, with the reduction reaching about 17.5% after 52 weeks. Most of the reduction occurred during the first six months.

Tesamorelin is generally weight neutral: a person may experience a reduction in visceral abdominal fat without a major decrease on the bathroom scale. The changes come in waist measurements and visual appearance.

Considerations

Tesamorelin requires regular subcutaneous injections, and its benefits can reverse after treatment is discontinued. Studies indicate that it may not be effective for everyone; approximately two-thirds of the people followed reported benefits.
